“THE SECOND COMING”

– William Butler Yeats.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood -dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle.
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Summary of the regarding poem:

The very first line of the poem, which is started with the symbolic word “Falcon” and that is consisting of a huge significance. Falcon hunts and kills small creatures, and that is a hawk as well as a large bird. It was once used for the seeking of hunting by the hunters. In the poem the falcon is meant the human being, and falconer means humanity.

That the same way gyre is meant the process of change. While flying and flying the falcon rises to the top of the higher sky, and couldn’t able to give the response to the owner of itself. The poem doesn’t start with a piece of pleasant news. The depth of the meaning is such as the human is not giving the response to humanity, which is drowned or, left by them.

These actual things are fallen apart, and the center of humanity and humans cannot hold for that reason that, and the symbolic falcon isn’t listening to the symbolic falconer. That’s why anarchy has descended on the earth. If we see the whole world, it is existing and it is not false. Everything which was truly pure and beautiful is drowned by the flood of blood.

Among whom humanity is found, are maintaining the silence without doing anything, and also got the threats by the cruel humans who are working hard to make the earth nightmare. The worsts are securing the places due to the empty places, and good people taking an escape from the best and major fields.

Summary of The Second Coming poem by William Butler Yeats

Surely, something is going to be happened. It might be the second coming of Jesus Christ. “The Second coming”! The speaker of the poem can hear the revelation which is at hand and also hard to be revealed. The speaker could have seen a vast fearful image that was actually hard or, pathetic to watch out. The actual image is “Spiritus Mundi” which is the absolute symbol of “The world Soul” or collective consciousness.

Somehow it would be coming from the vast desert which would be the place of appearance which is mentioned in the poem. It would be moving its thigh slowly and apart from this, the indignant desert bards might be started flying in a gyring process, and the darkness would drop there, whereas the desert bird’s shadow would have been fallen into the desert. And  it is seeing at the speaker with blank and a sun-like gaze which was the speaker’s thought of imagination, and also throughout of these.

It is the anti – Christ. It will start the carnage which will turn everything into vulture food. The mentioned part is such as it got a shape of a lion body and the head of a man which is a beast actually. It was sleeping for twenty centuries and sleeping is vexed due to humans cruelty.

That’s why it is supposed to bring the devastation and nightmare as well. And the time of the rough beast has come out, and his arriving place will be the Bethlehem, from where it will come forward to bring the inauspicious portion of the night as well as the devastation.

The Three-Fold Interpretation of the poem “The Second Coming”:

1st Interpretation (Religious):

 The arrived person is not the Jesus Christ, rather it is the anti – Christ as well as a beast. That will come forward from the desert area in Bethlehem. Poet Yeats tried to utter that actually, it may refer the anti – Christ which will bring the calamity, devastation and inauspicious portion of the night among people. The main reasons of this devastating execution are such like as the humans became ferocious, violent and vindictive.

They also became selfish and betrayal. People are jeopardizing the nature and each other with or without reasons. All altruistic things are drowned. The peace is drowned and humans are fighting and killing themselves, harming the nature and also the blood – dimmed tide is loosed in everywhere.

The mere anarchy has taken part and incubated in the present world. Actually, the human being has been provoked their devastation as well as the rough beast. And that will occur the end of time and end of everything.

2nd Interpretation:

 After finishing the world war – 1, even a bit of humanity was not found. The civilization was built and devastated also. Everything was drowned along with the light of optimism.  During his lifetime, the 1st world war was taking part and the poet Yeats was still alive at that mean time.

The huge calamity and devastation of the world war made him frustrated. And then this interpretation was written by him on the basis of the devastating world war.  He deliberately visualized the upcoming 2nd world war, and that interpretation was written after occurring the 1st world war.

3rd Interpretation (Theory of Ricorso):

 Human civilization is a cyclic process. It is started from anarchy, and then gradually oligarchy, monarchy, democracy come in there. And then the anarchy starts and that the same way entire process is gyrating or rotating. Huge changes come and these are executed in that gyrating system. The civilization changes every 2000 years.

The best civilizations turn into the worst.  Even worst civilization is dominated by the wars the decline of traditional standards. Every 2000 years the human civilization collapses. And then the civilization is to be build up with having the peace which is not eternal actually. On the basis of current world, the human civilization is on the way to get the catastrophe.
