Sustainable Functional Textiles- For Home Textiles and Sportwear

The ultimate goal of the FUN2GARMENT project is to develop a range of environmentally friendly fabrics with technical and functional finishes. They are developing Sustainable Functional Textiles for Home Textiles and sportswear.

FUN2GARMENT  is an AITEX project whose core goal is to develop and validate new textile finishing processes using laser; ozone and micronisation techniques adapted to use on natural and synthetic home textile fabrics and sportswear to functionalise the resulting technical fabric.

The goal is additionally to save water, energy and chemical products when compared to more conventional approaches to textile treatment which use processes such as spray drying; direct dyeing and dip coating. On other types of fabric such as denim; these new techniques give excellent results in terms of sustainability and product customisation but there are as yet; no validated references here in Spain on their development and application on the type of fabrics and final uses considered by FUN2GARMENT.

Sustainable Functional Textiles

The expected results from FUN2GARMENT are:

  • New home textile fabrics (mainly upholstery and curtains) with new textures; customised finishes and innovative designs by laser marking.
  • New pre-treatments (preparation) and cleaning abilities for home textiles achieved using ozone treatment.
  • Sports and leisure wear with laser-marked designs, with aesthetic finished achieved by ozone and micronised dye application; or with functional performance (water/oil-repellence, antimicrobial capability; anti-odour and anti-mosquito performance and flame retardance) via micronised finishing.
  • Reductions in water, energy; time and chemical consumption compared to other finishing processes.
  • General functional, safety, comfort and performance levels which are durable and wash-fast; which will permit future development of high-quality, sustainable textile articles.
  •  Evaluate and measure the project’s impact on leisure and home textile manufacturers and finishers; and suppliers of chemicals and machinery to the textile industry, etc.

Sustainable Functional Textiles

The functionalities which are expected to be developed using micronisation technology will be achieved using a process which favours reductions in the consumption of water (more than 80%) chemical products (up to 50%), and waste water (more than 90%) compared to more conventional processes.

The aesthetic and design effects achieved using the three processes during the project will include textures, designs and customised colours using laser marking, controlled colour degradation and enhanced rub and wash fastness using ozone treatment, new dyes with over-dye and random yet repeatable effects achieved using micronisation.

The project is funded by Conselleria d’Economia Sostenible, Sectors Productius, Comerç i Treball de la Generalitat Valenciana through IVACE, and co-funded by the EU’s ERDF, within the ERDF Operational Programme of the Comunitat Valenciana 2014-2020.  FILE: IMDEEA/2017/34
