Martindale Abrasion Tester Lab Report

Martindale Abrasion Tester Lab Report Martindale Abrasion and Pilling Tester is used to determine abrasion resistance as well as pilling resistance of the fabric. It consists of four testing plates on which the abrading fabrics are attached, these are mounted on the base plate of the instrument. There is a revolving plate, which revolves with the help of three cranks, pegs & motor. There are four sleeves attached to the revolving plate. The sample holders for abrasion & pilling testing are provided with the instrument. There is a set of weights for proper pressure on the test specimens. Templates for cutting the samples & abrading cloth and their mallet are also supplied as standard accessories.

Martindale Abrasion Tester Lab Report

  1. Know about abrasion.
  2. Determine the abrasion resistance of the given sample.
  3. Know about how to assessment of abrasion tests.
  4. Know about how to set the machine.

  1. Abrasion tester
  2. Scissor
  3. Electric balance
  4. Notebook
  5. Pen and pencil.

M/c specification:

  1. Name: Abrasion Tester
  2. Manufacturer: James H. Heal & Co. Ltd, Halifax, England.
  3. Model: Nu-Martindale 404

Working Procedure:

  1. At first, cut the fabric into 4 pieces according to the measurement of the instrument.
  2. Weigh these 4 pieces of fabric samples.
  3. Now place these samples in the instrument under a certain load as supplied in the instrument.
  4. Now start the machine and observe the counter of abrasion no.
  5. After abrasion of 200 bring out the first sample and weigh it.
  6. After abrasion of 300 bring out the second sample and weigh it.
  7. Similarly, after abrasion of 400 and 500 bring out the third and fourth samples and take their weight.
  8. Now put the weights before and after abrasions on a table and find out their wear index.

S/n Sample wt. before abrasion (mg) No. of abrasion cycle Sample wt. before abrasion (mg) Wt. loss Wear index
1 4970 200 4940 30 6
2 4680 300 4640 40 8
3 4860 400 4790 70 14
4 4870 500 4770 170 34

Martindale Abrasion Tester Lab Report

Suppose for s/n 2, we got cycle = 300, wt. loss = 40 therefore,

…………………..No. of Cycle × Wt. loss
Wear Index =………………………………………….

…300 × 40

= 8

It is easily understood that the more is no. of abrasion cycle the more will be the wt. loss of fabric. That is when a fabric is used more it losses its weight more. Now depending on yarn quality, fabric design, and above all end-use, this loss may be less or more, again may be quickly or lately. But indeed the fabrics will lose their weight and serviceability.
