After seizing a tremendous opportunity in Gaza, Israel is now poised to take advantage of another opportunity: a war in Lebanon. Whenever the threat of war arises, it seems Israel enters an endless land of opportunities. Every war is an opportunity, and every opportunity begets a war.
Is there a problem in Gaza? War is the solution. Is there a problem at the northern (Lebanese) border? Let there be another war. Many Israelis are now quite excited. After all, they have been waiting for such an opportunity for years. Others silently support this in a repressive state. Yet, they all seem to agree that there is no alternative.
Considering war as a dire necessity is one thing, while viewing it as an opportunity is another. This is an opportunity to create a new world, a new reality, a better situation than before. Hamas will be eliminated, hostages will be freed, and Hezbollah will become a subject of ridicule. Israelis who have fled their homes in the north will return, and flowers will bloom in Galilee. The same situation will occur for the residents along the Gaza border. What a marvelous opportunity war has brought!
History Repeats Itself
However, the truth is that throughout history, Israel has not been able to conduct a single war that improved the situation or solved problems; rather, wars like those in 1967 have exacerbated the situation. Still, it is said, wait for the next war, which will solve all our problems forever.
In fact, this “complete victory” has been achieved in the past. Hamas has been defeated permanently—assuming that Israel will now vanquish Hezbollah forever. The problem is that all such endeavors end with a few years of peace followed by another war, which is worse than the previous one. Supporters of a large-scale war in Lebanon are now eager to see the IDF at the outskirts of Beirut, claiming this is a significant opportunity. They are pressuring policymakers to act quickly to seize this opportunity.
Their argument is that the explosion in Lebanon blinded 500 people, creating a golden opportunity that might never return. So, why delay the war?
The Consequences of War
The idea that war brings opportunities is a manifestation of a sick mentality. Considering war as the only way to solve problems is a sign of mental distortion. However, in a country where someone like Karine Elhadad, a columnist for Israel Hayom, can describe the deaths of dozens of people, thousands injured, and the blinding of hundreds due to an explosion in Lebanon as “a great gift for our nation on the eve of the (Hebrew) New Year,” there is nothing surprising about anything.
“What we need is the incredible blow our enemies in the north have received. This demonstrates the excellence, the precise targeting, and above all, the ability to think a hundred steps ahead,” Elhadad said poetically. Yet, to any sensible person, war is nothing but an opportunity for bloodshed, destruction, and loss.
Looking to the Future
Those who cling to the idea of doing everything “forever” should be made fools after the Gaza war. This war was supposed to permanently resolve all our problems. In reality, a year later, we see that after intense fighting, thousands of casualties, and complete devastation, our problems remain unresolved. Instead, Israel will be in a much worse position after the war than it was when it entered.
So how can anyone think that a weary army, which has incurred global condemnation after facing a stronger enemy in more adverse terrain, will yield better results after the debacle in Gaza? Rather, this thought implies that most Israelis have failed to internalize their defeat in Gaza. They still cannot conceive that avoiding another war would be better for Israel than rushing towards Sidon (the third-largest city in Lebanon by the Mediterranean Sea). It must not happen again as it did in Rafah. Protests are occurring across Israel, but they are not against the war.
Where one group of soldiers is conducting a senseless and aimless massacre, also getting killed, and spreading devastation in Gaza, another group of soldiers is advancing northward for another unfortunate war, claiming that it will permanently eradicate those problems. Just thinking about such a situation makes one dizzy. Yet, everyone is loudly discussing these matters and swallowing the lies. After Lebanon, we will deal with Iran. Another opportunity will arise for us there. And that will permanently resolve all our problems!
গাজায় একটি মহাসুযোগ কাজে লাগানোর পর ইসরায়েল এখন আরেকটি মহাসুযোগ কাজে লাগাতে যাচ্ছে। আর তা হলো লেবাননে একটি যুদ্ধ। যখনই যুদ্ধের আশঙ্কা দেখা দেয়, তখনই ইসরায়েল যেন এক অসীম সুযোগের ভূমিতে প্রবেশ করে। প্রতিটি যুদ্ধই একটি সুযোগ, আর প্রতিটি সুযোগ একটি যুদ্ধ ডেকে আনে।
গাজায় সমস্যা হয়েছে? যুদ্ধই সমাধান। উত্তরাঞ্চলীয় (লেবানন) সীমান্তে সমস্যা দেখা দিয়েছে? আরেকটি যুদ্ধ হোক। বহু ইসরায়েলি এখন বেশ উত্তেজিত হয়ে রয়েছে। হাজার হোক, তারা তো একরকম একটি সুযোগের জন্য বছরের পর বছর অপেক্ষা করছিল। অন্যরাও একে নীরবে সমর্থন দিচ্ছে একটি নিপীড়নমূলক অবস্থায় পতিত হয়ে। তবে তারা প্রায় সবাই একমত যে আর কোনো বিকল্প নেই।
যুদ্ধকে একটি ভয়াবহ প্রয়োজনীয়তা হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা এক জিনিস আর একে একটি সুযোগ হিসেবে দেখা আরেক জিনিস। একটি নতুন বিশ্ব, নতুন বাস্তবতা, আগের চেয়ে ভালো একটি অবস্থা তৈরি করার সুযোগ যে এটা। হামাস নির্মূল হবে, জিম্মিরা সব ছাড়া পাবে আর হিজবুল্লাহ উপহাসের পাত্রে পরিণত হবে। উত্তরাঞ্চল থেকে ঘরবাড়ি ছেড়ে আসা ইসরায়েলিরা আবার তাদের বাড়িতে ফিরে যাবে, গ্যালিলেতে ফুল ফুটবে। একই রকম অবস্থা দেখা দেবে গাজা সীমান্তের অধিবাসীদের জন্য। যুদ্ধ কী চমৎকার সুযোগটাই না বয়ে এনেছে!
ইতিহাসের পুনরাবৃত্তি
অথচ সত্যি ঘটনা হলো, ইতিহাসজুড়ে ইসরায়েল এমন একটি যুদ্ধও করতে পারেনি, যা পরিস্থিতির উন্নতি ঘটিয়েছে বা সমস্যার সমাধান করেছে; বরং ১৯৬৭ সালের মতো আরও কিছু যুদ্ধ পরিস্থিতিকে খারাপের দিকে ঠেলে দিয়েছে। তারপরও বলা হয়েছে, পরবর্তী যুদ্ধের জন্য একটু অপেক্ষা করো, যা আমাদের সব সমস্যার সমাধান ঘটাবে এবং তা চিরতরে।
আসলে তো ‘চিরতরে’ এই ‘পরিপূর্ণ বিজয়’ ঘটেছে অতীতে। হামাসকে চিরতরে পরাজিত করা হয়েছে—এটা ধরে নিয়ে ইসরায়েল এবার চিরদিনের জন্য হিজবুল্লাহকে পরাভূত করবে। সমস্যা হলো, এ রকম সবকিছুই শেষ হয় কয়েক বছর শান্ত থেকে আরেকটি যুদ্ধের মধ্য দিয়ে, যা আগেরটার চেয়ে খারাপ হয়। লেবাননে একটি বড়সড় যুদ্ধের সমর্থকেরা এখন আইডিএফকে বৈরুতের উপকণ্ঠে দেখার জন্য লালায়িত হয়ে আছে এই দাবিতে যে এটি একটি বিরাট সুযোগ। তারা নীতিনির্ধারকদের ওপর চাপ তৈরি করছে দ্রুত এ সুযোগ কাজে লাগানোর জন্য।
তাদের যুক্তি এ রকম, পেজার বিস্ফোরণে লেবাননে ৫০০ মানুষ নতুন করে অন্ধ হয়ে গেলেও এটা এমন এক সুবর্ণ সুযোগ তৈরি করেছে, যা আর ফেরত পাওয়া না–ও যেতে পারে। তাহলে যুদ্ধ শুরু করতে আর দেরি কেন?
যুদ্ধের ফলাফল
যুদ্ধ একটি সুযোগ বয়ে আনে—এমন ধারণা তো আসলে অসুস্থ মনোভঙ্গির এক প্রকাশ। সমস্যা সমাধানের একমাত্র পন্থা হিসেবে যুদ্ধকে বিবেচনা করা মানসিক বিকৃতির লক্ষণ। তবে যে দেশে দৈনিক ইসরায়েল হাইমের কলামিস্ট কারিন এলদাদের মতো কেউ যখন লেবাননে পেজার বিস্ফোরণে কয়েক ডজন মানুষের মৃত্যু ঘটা, কয়েক হাজারের আহত হওয়া ও কয়েক শ মানুষের অন্ধত্ববরণের ঘটনাকে ‘(হিব্রু) নতুন বছরের প্রাক্কালে আমাদের জাতির জন্য এক বিরাট উপহার’ হিসেবে আখ্যায়িত করতে পারেন, তখন আর কোনো কিছুতে বিস্মিত হওয়ার কিছু থাকে না।
‘উত্তরে আমাদের শত্রুরা যে অসাধারণ আঘাত পেয়েছে, সেটাই তো আমাদের দরকার। এতে যে চমৎকারিত্বের, যে নিখাদ লক্ষ্যভেদ ও নাকাল করার, সর্বোপরি এক লাখ ধাপ এগিয়ে চিন্তা করার সক্ষমতার যে প্রকাশ ঘটেছে, সেটাই তো দরকার,’ কাব্যিক ঢঙে কারিন এলদাদ বলেছেন। অথচ যেকোনো জ্ঞানবুদ্ধিসম্পন্ন মানুষের কাছে যুদ্ধ রক্তপাত, ধ্বংসযজ্ঞ ও ক্ষয়ক্ষতি ছাড়া আর কোনো কিছুর সুযোগ নয়।
ভবিষ্যতের দিকে নজর
যারা ‘চিরতরে’ সবকিছু করার ধারণাকে আঁকড়ে ধরে আছে, গাজা যুদ্ধের পর তাদের তো বেকুব বনে যাওয়ার কথা। এ যুদ্ধের মাধ্যমে আমাদের সব সমস্যার চিরতরে সমাধান ঘটার কথা ছিল। বাস্তবে এক বছরের মাথায় এসে দেখা যাচ্ছে, তীব্র লড়াই, হাজার হাজার প্রাণহানি আর পুরোপুরি ধ্বংসযজ্ঞ চালানোর পরও আমাদের কোনো সমস্যার সমাধান হয়নি। বরং যতটা খারাপ অবস্থায় ইসরায়েল এই যুদ্ধে নেমেছিল, যুদ্ধ শেষে তার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি খারাপ অবস্থায় দাঁড়াবে।
তাহলে কীভাবে কেউ চিন্তা করতে পারে যে অধিকতর শক্তিশালী একটি শত্রুর সঙ্গে অধিকতর প্রতিকূল ভূমিতে লড়তে গিয়ে সারা দুনিয়ার কাছ থেকে নিন্দা কুড়ানো শ্রান্ত এক সেনাবাহিনী গাজায় বিপর্যয়ের পর তার চেয়ে ভালো ফল বয়ে আনবে? বরং এমন চিন্তার মানেই হলো, বেশিরভাগ ইসরায়েলি গাজায় ব্যর্থতাকে আত্মস্থ করতে পারেনি। তারা এখনো এটা চিন্তাই করতে পারছে না যে সিডনের (ভূমধ্যসাগরের কোলঘেঁষা লেবাননের তৃতীয় বৃহত্তম শহর) দিকে দ্রুত ছুটে যাওয়ার চেয়ে বরং আর কোনো যুদ্ধে জড়িয়ে না পড়াই ইসরায়েলের জন্য ভালো হবে। রাফায় যে রকম ঘটেছিল, সে রকম না হওয়া। (ইসরায়েলজুড়ে) প্রতিবাদ হচ্ছে, তবে তা যুদ্ধের বিরুদ্ধে নয়।
যেখানে একদল সেনা অর্থহীন ও লক্ষ্যহীনভাবে নিধনযজ্ঞ চালাচ্ছে, নিজেরাও নিহত হচ্ছে, গাজায় ধ্বংসযজ্ঞ ছড়িয়ে দিচ্ছে, সেখানে অন্য দলের সেনারা উত্তর দিকে অগ্রসর হচ্ছে আরেকটি দুর্ভাগা যুদ্ধের জন্য এবং সেটাও সেসব সমস্যা চিরতরে নির্মূল করার জন্য। এ রকম একটি পরিস্থিতি চিন্তা করতেই মাথা ঘুরে যায়। অথচ সবাই উচ্চ স্বরে এসব নিয়ে শুনছে ও মিথ্যা গিলছে। আর লেবাননের পর আমরা ইরানকে দেখে নেব। সেখানেও আমাদের জন্য সুযোগ আসবে। আর তা আমাদের সমস্ত সমস্যা চিরতরে দূর করার!
